A smart lock is still a lock. The electronics decide how you talk to it; the mechanical half decides whether it survives. That distinction matters more here than in most cities, because the same salt air that eats an ordinary cylinder eats the bolt, the cam and the motor drive inside a keypad lock, and a lock that cannot be opened by a key when its motor gives up is a problem rather than a convenience.

So the model is picked with the door in mind. On the west side that means a mechanism rated for coastal exposure and, ideally, a keyway you can still use when the batteries or the motor fail. Inland it is a freer choice and comes down to how you want to open it. Either way it is fitted into the bore already in the door wherever possible, which keeps an old door intact and avoids new holes in something that has been there since the thirties.

Setup happens with you standing there. Codes are chosen by you, entered twice and tested; the installer's default code never stays on a door we fit. Household members, a dog walker and whoever waters the plants get their own code where the lock supports it, so one of them leaving does not mean everybody changes theirs. What we do not do is connect anything to a building intercom or a wired entry system, which is electrical work.

Installation runs $185 to $469 with the $89 service call inside it. A keypad deadbolt into an existing bore sits at the low end; a lock on an old mortise door that needs adapting, or two doors in a stop, moves it up. Evening adds $55 and after midnight $95. Hardware you have bought yourself can be fitted, and if it is a model that will not last where you live you will hear that before it goes on rather than after.
